Why Styling Matters: Moodboards & Outfit Inspiration for Fall Family Photos

Capturing moments is only half the magic in family photography—the other half is how you look in those photos. The right outfits, colors, and textures can elevate your session, making your images feel timeless, warm, and effortlessly cohesive.

That’s why I love creating moodboards for my Pinterest page. They’re not just about picking pretty clothes—they tell a story through color, texture, and personality. I have written at length about my girl Whitney, who is the stylist of all stylists! But I have fun putting looks together, too, so I wanted to write a little blog about it!

A Few Fall & Holiday Shoppable Moodboards

1. Navy + Warm Fall Tones
Even if you’re not a navy fan (guilty 🙋‍♀️), it can work beautifully for your session! By layering warm accents like golden mustard, rich browns, and creamy ivory, navy becomes cozy and fall-ready. Playful details like bows for the girls and ruffle socks for babies keep the outfits fun while still polished. Outfits are styled for moms, dads, and kids—perfect for family photos that feel classic yet vibrant. I usually don’t suggest all blue and white in the fall, it’s my opinion, but the colors are too cool in contrast to the warmth of the green, brown & golden light all around it in the fall.

2. Floral, Green Gingham & Camel
This one is a playful mix of patterns and muted tones—think florals, soft green gingham, camel, and black accents. Perfect for families who want a little visual interest without feeling over-the-top. Accessories like hair bows, layered textures, and subtle coordinating pieces help bring everything together for photos that feel lively and natural.

3. Holiday-Inspired Palette
For those dreaming of festive family photos, this board blends soft red, ivory, gray-green, and camel/golden tones. It’s cozy, timeless, and perfect for capturing the warmth of the season. Layered textures, mixed stripe patterns, and colorful shoes with little details ensure every member of the family feels comfortable and photo-ready—whether it’s for holiday cards or just seasonal memories.
